Continuum of Activities

Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Name two resources people get from cows.

  2. Name five plants that people eat.

  3. Name two uses people have for trees.

  4. Name two resources people use to make clothing.
  1. A lot of plants that people eat are grown on farms.  What do you think might happen if many farms were damaged in natural disasters?  Write a paragraph to explain your prediction.
  1. People depend on trees to create many products.  As many trees are cut down to make these products, our environment is being hurt.  Write a paragraph explaining three ways that our environment is hurt due to our dependence on trees and give two suggestions about how we can decrease the need to cut down trees.
  2. Do you think it would impact people more if there was a shortage of plants for human use or a shortage of animals for human use?  Explain your thinking.

  3. Answers include, but are not limited to: paper, building materials, shade

  4. Answers include, but are not limited to: cotton, wool, hemp, flax, ramie, silk, mohair, coir

  5. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:

    • Less food for people to eat.

    • Food prices would increase.

    • People would eat less fruits and vegetables.

    • People would eat more processed foods that are unhealthy.

  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:

    • Animals lose their habitat.

    • There are fewer trees to use the carbon dioxide people create.

    • There are fewer trees to help produce the oxygen people need to breathe.

    • Trees help prevent erosion.  With fewer trees, there will be more erosion.

Suggestions may include, but are not limited to:

  • Recycling more paper

  • Using more recycled paper for new products

  • Use less paper (i.e.: eBooks, digital newspapers and magazines, etc.)
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:

    • People eat animals and plants.

    • Plants have vitamins and minerals people cannot get by only eating meat.

    • Plants and animals provide materials for other essentials such as clothing and shelter.
