Continuum of Activities

Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. What are two benefits of using a model to show a system?

  2. What are two negative aspects of using a model to show a system?
  1. Create a model to show how the components of a watershed are related.  Write a paragraph to explain your model.
  1. You are assigned a group project to show the movement of the planets in our solar system.  One of the members of your group wants to create a drawing.  Do you agree that this type of model should be used?  Would you recommend using a different type of model?  If so, what type of model would you use?  Explain your reasoning.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
    • Can simplify complex concepts
    • Provides visualization for complex concepts
    • More convenient that the real system
    • Can control safety concerns

  2. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
    • Cannot include all details in model – incomplete representations
    • Sometimes oversimplify a concept
    • Can be inaccurate
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
    • A watershed is an area of land that creates a drainage system into a body of water.
    • Some water will flow on top of the ground.
    • Some water will go underground.
    • Some water will evaporate.
    • Some water will be used by plants and/or animals.
    • The water will eventually flow to a stream, river, lake, or ocean.
    • The water will travel through the water cycle.
    • When it falls as precipitation, it will work its way through another watershed.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
    • A drawing is a very simple model to create.
    • A drawing would adequately illustrate the orbit of each plant.
    • A computer model could be used to show shape of orbit and different speed of orbits.
    • A rotating 3D model would be able to be manipulated to show the orbits.
