Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Inherited traits are genetically encrypted traits that are passed from a parent to an offspring.

  2. Acquired traits are characteristics that are learned by an organism as a result of external influences.

  3. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • Eye color
  • Height/size
  • Hair color
  • Natural skin color
  • Migration (in birds, for example)
  • Swimming (in aquatic life forms)
  • Hunting prey
  • Care for young (in many species)
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • Children learning to write
  • Someone who is good at a sport
  • Being a good saxophone player
  • Having a scar
  • Being a good baker
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:

**Note: Many changes to inherited traits are just temporary, such as dying one’s natural hair color, changing one’s eye color with the use of contacts, changing one’ skin tone due to sun tan, etc.

  1. Acceptable responses must include: identification of self and four other individuals with an accurate classification of at least three inherited and three acquired traits for each.
