Continuum of Activities

Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Define renewable resources.

  2. Define nonrenewable resources.
  1. Give an example of at least two renewable and two nonrenewable resources.

  2. Identify one renewable resource. Explain how this resource provides for human needs.

  3. Identify one nonrenewable resource. Explain how this resource provides for human needs.
  1. Identify one renewable resource and one nonrenewable resource. Assess how although this resource provides for human needs, there are disadvantages of its use.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Renewable resources are resources that can naturally replenish over time.

  2. Nonrenewable resources are resources that cannot be replenished at the same rate which it is consumed.

  3. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:

Renewable Resources

  • Wood/Trees
  • Crops
  • Sun
  • Wind
  • Water
  • Geothermal energy
  • Animals (through reproduction)

Nonrenewable Resources

  • Oil
  • Natural gas
  • Petroleum
  • Nuclear power
  • Minerals
  1. Acceptable responses must identify a renewable resource and how it is used to provide for human needs.
    Sample Responses:
  • Crops- provide food for humans to eat, provide food for animals to eat (which humans in turn may consume)
  • Sun- provides energy for plants to grow (which provides food for humans and animals), provides solar power to produce electricity
  • Animals- provide food for humans, provide material for clothing production
  1. Acceptable responses must identify a nonrenewable resource and how it is used to provide for human needs.
    Sample Response:
  • Fossil fuels- provide fuel to provide heat, energy, gas for vehicles to assist humans and getting around to places
  1. Acceptable responses must include the identification of one renewable and one nonrenewable resource and assessment of its disadvantages.
    Sample Responses:

Renewable:

  • Wood- destroys habitats for animals, interrupts the control of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere

Nonrenewable:

  • Fossil fuels- cause pollution, cannot be replenished as fast as they are used
