    6. Describe the importance of runoff citing a minimum of two pieces of evidence.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. C

  2. B

  1. Answers may include, but are not limited to:
Seepage is the process of water from precipitation being soaked into the ground, just as a sponge held under running water absorbs the water. Seepage is important to farmers because it allows the water to travel below earth’s surface and therefore be soaked up through plants roots.

  1. Answers may include, but are not limited to:
Trees carry large stores of water in their trunks. They are able to extract the groundwater through their roots. When the trees are removed from their environment, the water that was stored in them is also removed. When this happens quickly over a small period of time, we see deforestation lead to desertification because of the removal of water. If the trees are kept intact in their environments, their water remains in the water cycle.

  1. Answers may include, but are not limited to:
Runoff typical gets soaked up through the ground turning into groundwater. Groundwater can then be used to hydrate plants or the water will flow into aquifers keeping wells full. If runoff does not turn into groundwater, it will flow into rivers, lakes, or oceans over time. This allows their environment to fill with oxygen and maintains a healthy amount of water in that environment.
