Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Student defines textual evidence as facts gleaned from the text that accurately support an interpretation of the text.

  2. Students will identify expectations of the writing task in which claims are supported with textual evidence.  For example, in a short response task, students are to succinctly introduce a claim, provide relevant, accurate textual evidence in support of the claim, and then discuss how the evidence supports their claim.   In longer responses, students should recognize that in addition to these central elements, an adequate introduction and conclusion are necessary.  This can be modified dependent upon task (class writing, state assessments, etc.).

  3. Student will identify a central idea or theme in a text and provide relevant, accurate textual evidence in support of the claim.  Student will move beyond a literal understand to offer insights that are founded on textual evidence.

  4. Student will identify the author’s intent in writing an informational text and provide relevant, accurate textual evidence in support of their claim.

  5. Student demonstrates an ability to develop a shorter response in which they succinctly make a claim and then provide relevant, accurate textual evidence in support of their claim.  The claim will offer insights that are founded in textual evidence.

  6. Student demonstrates an ability to craft an essay in which they succinctly make a claim based on the question and provide relevant, accurate textual evidence in support of the claim.  These long essays will include an introduction and a conclusion.  This can be modified to suit the needs of the assessment.
