Continuum of Activities
The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.
This continuum of activities offers:

Activities
- Match frequently confused words with the correct definitions. Words that are likely part of this list include to/too/two, there/their/they’re, its/it’s, and others that the teacher and/or student have identified.
- Determine the correct words among frequently confused words for use in writing.
- Apply understanding of frequently confused words by selecting the right word in the following sentences:
- I have (to, too, two) sisters and three brothers.
- I’m going (to, too, two) New York this weekend.
- I’m (to, too, two) nervous about getting up on stage to perform.
- We are happy with (there, their, they’re) work on the project.
- Put the new sofa over (there, their, they’re).
- In a few hours, (there, their, they’re) going to play golf.
- The dog lost (its, it’s) ball while playing fetch.
- On a cloudy day, (its, it’s) hard to see the blue sky.
- In a given situation, select the correct frequently confused word and explain why the word you selected was correct.
- Construct sentences that include frequently confused words used correctly.

- Additional words should be added to the list if students are frequently confusing them.
- Student demonstrates the ability to choose the correct word from frequently confused words. The student will first need to identify and recognize that the word may be confusing and then select the correct word based on his/her understanding of the meanings of the words and the sentence.
- Student applies understanding of frequently confused words by selecting the right word.

- Student explains why the word choice of commonly confused words is the right one for the use in a given situation. This involves not only selecting the correct word, but also being able to justify and explain the choice.
- Student is able to use commonly confused words in his/her own writing. This should be evident in a variety of venues including stand-alone sentences as well as being a part of larger writings.
