Description

The PA CAREER ZONE has a free interest profiler under the menu "Explore" and the Subtitle "Assess Yourself."  The interest profiler has a series of questions about work activiities that people do on their jobs.  The assessment is web-based and students just have to go through and answer 180 questions with Like, Dislike or Unsure.

The results will produce a summary of the student interests that represents how much they might enjoy each activity.  The results wll provide the top three interest areas where a student might enjoy the activities of a job.  Students can use these areas of interest when looking for specific job possibilities.  The program also recommends three other possible areas of interest.

Finally, students can click on jobs that are specific jobs that are related to their area of interest, and see potential salary scales and videos that further describe that job.  Students can also click on a screen that will identify college majrs that are needed to pursue that career, and potential job openings.

The assessment follows the theories of Holland and the students will finish with a score of RIASEC, focusing on the top three and then the next three most popular.

Rationale

This interest inventory is a good place to start in helping students identify what occupation they might like when they get older.  School counselors can use the results to assist students with developing a potential career plan, and help them look at continuing education.
