Description
The Four Blocks Literacy Model is a multimethod, multilevel literacy framework developed by Pat Cunningham and Dottie Hall of Wake Forest University, used in elementary classrooms to successfully teach students to read and write. Teachers using The Four Blocks Literacy Model have an organized plan for instruction that encompasses all the different ways students learn to read and write. Instructional time is divided into these Four Blocks: Guided Reading, Self-Selected Reading, Writing, and Working with Words.
Using this framework enables teachers to utilize many of the best practices in reading and writing. Students do not learn in the same way or at the same pace; therefore, The Four Blocks Literacy Model provides instruction that supports a variety of learning style and at a pace that supports both the struggling students as well as students who catch on quickly.
