PennDOT Call for Safety Citizens Submissions for Bicycle & Motorcycle Safety

4/6/2022

PennDOT is extending a Safety Citizens challenge to all students, teachers, faculty, staff, and parents.  This program encourages community members to answer traffic safety questions in original and creative ways. Staff, teachers, students of all ages, as well as families are invited to participate!

Throughout the year, PennDOT posts information and asks a question about different topics challenging Safety Citizens to come up with creative ways to answer the safety question. Submissions could include a short video, poem, drawing, or any type of original artwork.  With each topic, PennDOT will choose submissions that meet that mission to be featured on its statewide social media pages, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

The current topic is bicycle and motorcycle safety. Motorists, bicyclists and motorcyclists are expected to share the road. Participants are asked to submit a response answering the question, “What are some good tips to keep everyone safe?”

Kid Challenge: Helmets keep your head safe while riding.  Kids are asked to decorate and send a personally designed bike helmet they would use to protect their heads. They can draw their own or use one of the coloring pages provided online.

Program details, deadlines and instructions regarding how to submit videos and artwork can be found online at https://www.penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Safety/Pages/SafetyCitizens.aspx.  Questions can be emailed to SafetyCitizens@pa.gov. Also available is information on future topics, which include commercial vehicle safety, seat belt and child passenger safety and impaired driving.  Submissions are due by April 29.
