Supporting Students in Poverty Toolkit

Improving student outcomes starts with strong, supported teaching. The High-Impact Instructional Practices (HIIP) Toolkit: Supporting Students in Poverty provides educators with a collection of action guides they can use to strengthen core instruction across all classrooms, schools, and systems, with a particular focus on serving students and families living in poverty.

The HIIP Toolkit is anchored on five cross-curricular instructional practices: Create Conditions for Learning, Build Vocabulary and Verbal Skills, Teach Students to Monitor Their Progress, Cultivate a Nurturing Environment, and Embrace Families and Their Experiences.

Each practice contains a series of guides, which outline specific actions educators can take, provide practical examples, and highlight the research behind the practices, and equip teachers, principals, coaches, and system leaders with tools to support and sustain improvement. Designed to be adaptable across content areas and grade levels, the HIIP Toolkit easily aligns with state priorities and teacher standards, providing a practical, cost-neutral way to strengthen instruction systemwide.
