Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

 

  1. Use the meaning of the prefix/suffix and/or the meaning of the root word to define given words.
  1. Identify difficult words in a given passage and look up their meanings.  Then use synonyms or antonyms to help define those words.
  1. Use context clues to define the underlined words in this passage.
  1. What is the meaning of the underlined word, as it is used in this sentence?
  1. Describe strategies that you used to define difficult words within this passage.
  1. Analyze the way the author wrote the passage that allowed you to understand difficult words. Give specific examples of what was done.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Students will accurately define words with affixes.
  1. Students will identify synonyms or antonyms to help define difficult words in a passage.
  1. Students will look for context clues to help define the chosen difficult words in a passage.
  1. Students will choose the correct definition of a multiple-meaning word, using the context of the sentence.
  1. Students will identify words that were difficult within the passage. They will describe the strategies that were used, including specific details that helped them understand the meanings of these words.
  1. Students will understand grade 3 level words. They will explain the context clues that the author embedded to help readers understand difficult words. They will find clues such as synonyms, antonyms, examples, and definitions.
