Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Who is providing the information in the passage?
  1. Is the paragraph written in first-person or third-person?
  1. Identify the author’s point of view.
  1. Determine whether the author is providing information or trying to persuade you.
  1. Explain why you agree or disagree with what the author has said.
  1. Identify information that is missing from the passage that would improve the understanding of the topic.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Students will state who is providing the information in the passage.
  1. Students will read and determine whether the paragraph is written in first-person or third-person.
  1. Students will use details from the passage to determine what the author believes about the main idea.
  1. Students will use information from the passage as evidence as to whether the author is informing or persuading.
  1. Students will need to process the information provided in order to make an informed decision to either agree or disagree with the author. They will provide content from the passage to show their support or they will refute the author’s beliefs about the topic.
  1. Students will analyze the information given in the passage. They will determine areas that need further explanation and tell why it would enhance understanding. They will also identify concepts that were not mentioned at all and would better support the understanding of the topic.
