Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

  1. What is the root of this word?
  1. Use what you know about prefixes and suffixes to determine the meaning of the following word.
  1. Use context clues to understand the words in bold print.
  1. What is the meaning of this word as it is used in the passage?
  1. Explain how the author wrote the passage in a way that allowed you to determine the meanings of new vocabulary.
  1. Analyze the passage for appropriate placement of context clues that help to define difficult words. Identify words in which the author failed to include clues to help the reader.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Students will identify roots of words by removing a prefix, suffix, or both.
  1. Students will define a word using the meaning of the prefix, suffix, or both, along with the meaning of the root word.
  1. Students will demonstrate their understanding of words in bold print. They will identify the context clues that led them to that understanding.
  1. Students will recognize that words have multiple meanings. They will use the context of the passage to determine the proper definition of the word.
  1. Students will recognize the author’s use of context clues, synonyms and antonyms, and affixes that are intended to help the reader understand difficult words.
  1. Students will demonstrate an understanding of grade 3 level text. They will recognize words that would be difficult for many third graders and will determine if appropriate context clues were included to aid the reader.
