Answer Key/Rubric

Students will identify roots of words by removing a prefix, suffix, or both.

Students will define a word using the meaning of the prefix, suffix, or both, along with the meaning of the root word.

Students will demonstrate their understanding of words in bold print. They will identify the context clues that led them to that understanding.

Students will recognize that words have multiple meanings. They will use the context of the passage to determine the proper definition of the word.

Students will recognize the author’s use of context clues, synonyms and antonyms, and affixes that are intended to help the reader understand difficult words.

Students will demonstrate an understanding of grade 3 level text. They will recognize words that would be difficult for many third graders and will determine if appropriate context clues were included to aid the reader.
