Continuum of Activities
The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

Answer Key/Rubric
- Students will recognize appropriate transition words or phrases to use in a concluding sentence or paragraph. They will choose from a list of words/phrases. Possible acceptable answers are as we have seen, as I have said, in conclusion, and in summary.
- Students will read a sentence and choose from two possible transition words or phrases. The word or phrase should help to establish the end of the writing and should work to leave the reader thinking about the focus of the writing. Possible acceptable answers are as we have seen, as I have said, in conclusion, and in summary.
- Students will read an informational passage. They will identify the transition words used in the closing of the passage. Possible answers could be as we have seen, as I have said, in conclusion, and in summary.
- Students will be provided a text or a main idea of a text. Considering the main idea, they will choose the closing that would best support it. The student should recognize a clear connection between their choice and the main idea.
- Students will read an informational passage. They will discuss the strategy used by the author to close the passage. They will explain how the closing connected the reader back to the topic and main ideas of the passage. Possible strategies discussed could be that the closing summed up the main details, left them with a closing thought, asked them a question, or used a quote. They should identify any transition words used by the author in the closing.
- Students will write a closing for their informational writing. They should choose an appropriate strategy that leaves the reader thinking about the topic and most important information. Possible strategies use could be a summary of the main details, a statement that leaves the reader with a closing thought, a question, or a quote. They should use a transition word or phrase to begin their closing. Possible transition words are as we have seen, as I have said, in conclusion, and in summary.
