Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Identify any area of conflict within the text.

  2. State the main causes of the problem or situation presented in the text.
  1. Depending on the text, summarize the different perspectives presented.  Predict how each of these perspectives might influence the outcome of the situation/problem presented in the text.

  2. Identify possible causes of the problem/situation and any possible solutions presented in the text.
  1. Depending on the text, cite evidence that demonstrates your understanding of how events or people have affected the problem/situation presented in the text.

  2. Depending on the passage, compare and contrast two possible solutions to the problem/situation presented in the text.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Students will be able to accurately identify the source of conflict in the text.  Students will recognize the main problem presented in the text.

  2. Students will be able to list possible causes for the problem/situation presented in the text.  Answers will be based on textual evidence and will come directly from information presented in the text.

  3. Students will be able to identify at least two possible perspectives on the problem/situation presented in the text.  They will be able to recognize the pros and cons of each side.

  4. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the causes of the problem/situation presented in the text and will be able to evaluate any possible solutions presented in the text.

  5. Students will be able to discuss how people or events have influenced the central idea of the text.  They will cite relevant, accurate textual evidence that demonstrates their understanding of how these people or events affected the author’s central idea.  Answers will be based in relevant, accurate textual evidence.

  6. Students will identify two possible solutions to the problems/situations presented in the text and compare and contrast these solutions with relevant, accurate textual evidence.
