Answer Key/Rubric

  1. 25,000
  1. 470,000
  1. 300,000 packages were sent out
  1. Answers as follows:
  1. Maggie was correct.

Reasons why Juanita and Chris were incorrect might include, but are not limited to:

  • Juanita rounded to the ten thousand’s place, not the thousands
  • Chris rounded to the correct place value but he put the wrong number in the thousands place.
  • The digit in the hundreds place indicates that you would not round the digit in the hundreds place up, but then you need to keep the digit given.
  • Chris put a lower number in the thousands place when he rounded instead of keeping the digit that was given.
  1. Steps to round 46,575 to the nearest ten thousand might include, but are not limited to:
  • Find the digit in the ten thousands place.  In this number it is 6.
  • Look at the number to the right of that, in this number it is the 5 in the hundreds place.
  • If the digit to the right is 5 or more then the value of the place you are rounding to goes up by one.  If it is 4 or less the digit stays the same.
  • This number will have to be rounded up because of the 5 in the hundreds place.
  • The answer is 47,000
