Activities

  1. Which variable is dependent in the table below

  1. Which variable on the graph is independent?

  1. Write an equation using the data from the table below.

  2. Each day Amir delivers newspapers after school.  If he delivers 30 papers per day write an equation to show how many papers p he delivers in d days.  Graph the equation on the grid provided.

  3. When Hillary goes to work she has to pay a weekly rate to park in the parking lot across from her office building.  She pays $12 per week.  Fill in the table below to show how much she pays to park.

    What is the independent variable?
    What is the dependent variable?

  4. Looking at the graph below write an equation to show the relationship between the number of days, d, that you rent a car and the cost, c.  What is the dependent variable on the graph? What is the independent variable on the graph?

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. The y variable is dependent on the value of the x.

  2. Time in hours is the independent variable on the graph.

  1. m = 9w
  1. = 30d

  2. The independent variable is weeks. The number of weeks does not depend on how much she is paying to park her car.  The weeks will continue regardless of how much the parking costs.
    The dependent variable is the cost of parking.  The cost does depend on how many weeks you use the parking lot.
  1. Equation: c = 25d

The independent variable is time in days. The number of days does not depend on how much is being charged to rent a car.  The days will continue to increase over time.
The dependent variable is the cost to rent a car.  The cost does depend on how many days you rent the car for.
