  1. A line of best fit drawn for a scatterplot representing the number of chapters (x) in a book and the total number of pages (y) has an equation of y = 12x.  What is the slope of this line and what does it mean?
  1. A line of best fit drawn for a scatterplot representing the number of chapters (x) in a book and the total number of pages (y) has an equation of y = 12x.  What is the y-intercept of this line and what does it mean?
  1. You have a savings account into which you plan to deposit the same amount of money each month.  The total amount in the account, y, after x months is represented by the equation y = 125x + 1200.  What is the amount you are depositing monthly?  Why?  How much will be in your account after a year?  Show your work.
  1. Use the given equation y = -200x + 2400 to come up with a situation it could represent.  Explain.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. The slope is which means an average of 12 pages per chapter.
  1. The y-intercept is (0, 0), which means on average a book with 0 chapters has 0 pages.
  1. You are depositing $125 each month, which is the slope of the equation.  You will have $2700 in your account after a year (12 months).
Student work may include, but is not limited to:

  1. Answers will vary.  Student examples should include a slope of -200 and a starting point of 2400.
