Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

 

  1. Identify the complete and simple subjects in the following sentences.
  1. Underline the pronouns in each sentence.
  1. Read the following sentences to see if the verbs agree with the subjects. If they do, write correct on the line. If they do not, write the verb correctly on the line.
  1. Read the following sentences to see if the pronouns agree with the antecedent. If it does, write correct on the line. If it does not, write the correct pronoun on the line.
  1. Fill in the missing words to complete the story.
  1. Evaluate the following passage for mistakes in subject-verb and pronoun-antecedent agreement. Find mistakes and correct them. Explain how you know that your changes are correct.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Students will identify the complete subject in the sentences. They will then identify the simple subject.
  1. Students will identify pronouns found in sentences.
  1. Students will read sentences, checking for subject-verb agreement. If there is a mistake, they will change the verb to correct it.
  1. Students will read sentences, checking for pronoun-antecedent agreement. They should ensure that the pronoun agrees with number, gender, and person. When a mistake is found, they should write the correct pronoun to correct it.
  1. Students will be presented with a story that is missing words. Some sentences will be missing the subject, others will be missing verbs. Students will add words to complete the story, making sure that the subjects and verbs agree.
  1. Students will proofread a passage, looking for mistakes in subject-verb and pronoun-antecedent agreement. They will identify the mistakes and then correct them. They should explain how they identified the mistakes. They should discuss whether the subjects were singular or plural and how that affects the verb. They should discuss pronoun agreement in number and gender.
