Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

 

  1. Tell whether the following sentences are facts or opinions.
  1. Which of the following statements would support the given topic?
  1. Find the sentences in the passage that help you to know the meaning of the given word.
  1. Choose a text structure that would work best for presenting your information in your writing.
  1. Write a draft of the body of your writing.
  1. Choose a text feature to include in your writing. This feature should help the reader understand your topic more clearly.

  1. Students will read sentences and identify them as facts or opinions.
  1. Students will read several sentences. They will choose the one that would support a given topic.
  1. Students will reread the passage, looking for a sentence containing context clues to help define a given word.
  1. Students will consider their topic and the information that will be used to choose a text structure for their writing. The structure should support the presentation of the information. Possible structure could include compare/contrast, problem/solution, cause/effect, or sequence.
  1. Students will write a draft of the body of their writing. They should use their chosen text structure to organize their information. Details should support, explain, and/or define the topic.
  1. Students will choose an appropriate text feature to include in the writing. It should provide additional information about the topic, enhancing the reader’s understanding. Examples of possible features students could include are illustrations/pictures, captions, definitions, maps, graphs, and diagrams.
